7 Ways Digital Minimalism Will Improve Your Life

By Blog, Business Organizing, Digital Minimalism No Comments

Here are 7 ways digital minimalism will improve your life if you’re striving for greater efficiency in your business operations this year!

As an entrepreneur, business owner, or freelancer, you likely rely on many apps and tools to run your business efficiently. However, we also know that navigating through digital clutter and distractions severely impacts productivity and time freedom.

Enter digital minimalism – a philosophy focused on eliminating distractions.

With less abundant clutter and system inefficiencies, this opens space to create more time freedom, and mental clarity.

In this blog post, I’ll share why I’ve been embracing digital minimalism as a business owner with 7 ways digital minimalism will improve your life. I’m also going to share my own frameworks to help you declutter your digital life and streamline your business!

Why Digital Minimalism Matters

As someone juggling multiple businesses and responsibilities, I’ve experienced firsthand the overwhelm and burnout that comes with constant digital distractions.

Since embracing digital minimalism, I’ve transformed my business and life in ways I never thought possible.

When I first began dabbling in research about digital minimalism, I thought I might be able to clear out my camera roll photos, streamline my calendar, and enjoy less time on technology…

Now I’ve come to discover that practicing digital minimalism brings many more benefits than these initial few!

Here are the top four benefits I’ve experienced:

4 Benefits of Digital Minimalism

  1. Peace of Mind

No constant notifications or distractions pull me away from the present moment. I now have the mental clarity to focus on important tasks without worrying about the balance of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Less really is more!

  1. Increased Productivity

With streamlined digital systems, I can start tasks efficiently and finish them even quicker. I’m not wasting time searching for files or getting lost in tabs when everything I need is at my fingertips.

  1. Structured Business Operations

Developing streamlined workflows and processes has allowed my team and I to work much smoother. Introducing automation has eliminated most of our daily, lower-level administrative tasks.

  1. Intentional Presence

Instead of being tethered to my devices, practicing digital minimalism means I’m now more present in day-to-day life. Whether spending time with loved ones or engaging in leisure activities, I’m diligent and intentional about my device usage.

How was I able to accomplish all of this?

One of the key factors that enabled me was a shift in mindset. Rather than viewing digital decluttering as a tedious chore, I began to see it as a pathway to liberation. Seeing time spent organizing my digital tools as a means of reclaiming my time freedom and mental space.

With these newfound perspectives, I began a process of elimination. This not only simplified my digital life but also instilled a newfound sense of focus.

Here’s exactly how I did it:

7 Ways Digital Minimalism Will Improve Your Life

Audit and Declutter: Start by auditing your digital devices and online accounts. Delete or archive unnecessary files, tools, photos, emails, etc.

Set Boundaries: Designate specific times for checking emails, social media, and other time-sucking online activities. Practice self-discipline to build resistance to the coercing of these platforms.

Simplify and Leverage Your Tools: Identify essential apps and tools for your business. Cut the rest that either complicate your processes or aren’t essential. Streamline your workflows accordingly. Remember – optimize, streamline, and automate wherever possible.

Practice Mindful Consumption: Limit exposure to negative content and declutter your follow list. Surround yourself only with content that inspires you and aligns with your goals.

Disconnect Regularly: Take breaks from digital devices and engage in screen-free activities. Start by leaving your phone at home when going for walks, short errand trips, and the like. Work your way up to full days off of tech to see a significant boost in creativity and focus.

Focus on the How: Minimize the number of platforms and tools you use. Centralize your projects in one system to simplify your workflow. In digital minimalism, if a tool is not simplifying your life, remove it and commit to finding a better way.

Creative Thinking Time: Allow yourself space for creative thinking and problem-solving. Boredom is never a bad thing! Practice proactive problem-solving to enhance your business flow with digital minimalism.

By implementing these frameworks of mine, you’ll streamline your business operations, boost productivity, and reclaim your valuable time freedom! Now that you are equipped with the knowledge of 7 ways digital minimalism will improve your life, don’t forget to start implementing them today.

The 6 Fundamentals of Digital Minimalism

By Blog, Digital Minimalism, Digital Organizing No Comments

Practicing the 6 fundamentals of digital minimalism for the past two years has drastically altered my life.

In a world where being busy is glorified and constant connectivity is expected, the thought of deliberately slowing down has been gaining popularity.

As someone who has dedicated over two decades to decluttering both physical and digital spaces, I’ve come to realize the profound impact of digital minimalism’s fundamental habits.

The concept is simple yet transformative. By shedding digital distractions, we reclaim our time, focus, and mental clarity.

In this blog post, I’ll share the 6 fundamentals of digital minimalism that have been integral in my minimalist journey. Along with practical tips for implementing them in your own life!

The 6 Fundamentals of Digital Minimalism

  1. Declutter Your Systems

Decluttering serves as the foundational pillar of digital minimalism. Start by gathering all your devices; phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc. Identify what is currently working for you and optimize those systems. Then, determine which non-essential apps and tools you can eliminate. Simplifying your digital tools will significantly reduce mental clutter and increase your productivity.

  1. Set Clear Boundaries

The strongest of the 6 fundamentals of digital minimalism is boundaries for yourself. Establishing boundaries around your technology usage is crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship with digital devices. We have all fallen victim to “doom-scrolling” at one time or another. To combat this habit, decide at what times you’ll check your phone in the morning and exactly when you’ll turn it off or put it away at night. Disable notifications outside of these times and leave your phone in another room. This practice will help you minimize distractions and be fully present in social settings, or even in your own company.

  1. Leave Your Phone Alone

Taking regular breaks from technology can help alleviate stress and reduce cortisol levels. Start by challenging yourself to spend an entire day without your phone. Leaving your phone behind during outings will enhance your personal enjoyment of the activity and sincere engagements with others.

  1. Define Digital Minimalism for Yourself

The 6 fundamentals of digital minimalism are for everyone, though the way they are practiced may look different for each individual. It’s essential to define what digital minimalism means to YOU and have an idea of your goals going into it. Focus on efficiency, rather than adhering to strict minimalist standards. Since digital minimalism has many levels, remember not to get overwhelmed. Start with the small steps and work your way up!

  1. Choose Screen-Free Activities

Schedule leisure time into your calendar for activities that don’t require screen time. Things such as reading, walking, gardening, crafting, studying, etc. Creating a structured balance between tech and non-tech activities leads to greater fulfillment and reduced dependence on digital devices.

  1. Use the 80/20 Rule

Apply the Pareto Principle to your digital life by focusing on the 20% of apps and tools that yield 80% of your best results. Streamline your app usage and prioritize those that provide the most value and efficiency. Choosing simplicity over complexity will increase your personal productivity now, and reduce digital clutter in the process.

Incorporating the 6 fundamentals of digital minimalism into your daily routine paves the way for a more intentional and fulfilling relationship with technology.

Remember, digital minimalism is not about deprivation. But rather prioritizing what truly matters in life to be able to optimize your digital environment accordingly.

How to Set Up Your Smartphone Like A Digital Minimalist

By Blog, Digital Minimalism, Digital Organizing, Time Management No Comments

Ready to learn how to set up your smartphone like a digital minimalist?

Setting up a “Digital Minimalist Phone” may be your saving grace. If you often find yourself mindlessly scrolling through your phone, wasting hours of your day on unproductive activities… this is for you!

Modern Day “Doom”

“Doom-scrolling” is a common habit that leaves many of us feeling guilty and frustrated with ourselves.

In today’s world, our phones have become an extension of our own person. Levels of self-discipline are falling because that unhealthy digital attachment leads to anxiety and distraction.

Our whole digital world is oozing with content and we’re bombarded on the daily with beeps, pings, and buzzes. Targeted ads are tailored to our desires, and therefore, our attention is easier to grab and hold.

Digital addiction can come from many different streams. It is not always our own fault or even conscious doing.

Businesses obsessively honing in on their customers’ weaknesses to exploit them monetarily (or otherwise) is one of the deep roots of our digital addictions. And we ALL fall victim to this in one way or another.

As this isn’t going away anytime in the foreseeable future, our best way out of the cycle of digital depression is to take BACK control over how we spend time on our smartphones… with digital minimalism.

“Why am I so attached to my phone?”

Spending the past two years practicing as a Digital Minimalist has truly opened my eyes. For example, when I don’t monitor my screen time, a quick email check can easily waste an otherwise productive hour.

I have been writing many new chapters of my life these past few years, as well as learning a lot about human behaviour.

I first noticed this habit and impulse of mine to always be checking my phone. The cycle would begin with having feelings of anxiety and that I need to have my phone on me at all times, otherwise, I might miss something important.

This led me to ask myself, “Why am I so attached to my phone?”

When I noticed this phone-induced anxiety coming up, I started to question myself each time, “What is it that I’m avoiding?”

Is it going out for a walk? Is it reading a book? Procrastinating on deskwork?

I started consciously noticing HOW I was using my phone. As well as thinking about which distractions I could eliminate and what other things were causing me to feel “tied” to my phone.

In this blog post, I’m sharing more about the exact steps in my journey to becoming a Digital Minimalist. I’ll be guiding you through how to set up your phone so that it can intentionally support a more focused and creative life.

How to Set Up Your Smartphone Like A Digital Minimalist

Reset Your Digital Habits

Before diving into the setup process, it’s essential to acknowledge the habits that KEEP us tethered to our phones. The impulse to constantly check for notifications or escape into endless scrolling can take a toll on our productivity and mental well-being. By understanding WHY we’re so attached to our devices, only then can we begin to make lasting changes to our digital minimalist habits.

Create an Intentional Phone Setup

Setting up your phone for digital minimalism starts with organizing your home screen. By curating widgets and essential apps, you can minimize distractions and focus on what truly matters. Useful widgets (like a timer, calendar, and navigation tools) can help you stay on track with your tasks and appointments. All while decluttering unnecessary apps helps reduce visual noise and temptations.

Turn Off Distractions

To further enhance your digital minimalist setup, consider turning off features like Always On Display and Raise to Wake. These settings can create unnecessary distractions and drain your phone’s battery quickly. Just because we CAN be reached 24/7 does not mean we MUST be available 24/7. Protect your peace and set boundaries around your time by disabling them. You’ll be reducing interruptions and able to have more mindful interactions with your device.

Customize Your Environment

Changing your phone’s wallpaper to a calming and inspiring image can set the tone for a focused and intentional interaction each time you pick up your device. Organizing your apps into folders or using the app library feature can streamline your digital minimalist experience even more. Reduce app clutter and file them out of sight to lessen temptations and make it easier to find what you need, when you need it.

Digital Minimalists Aren’t Perfect

Practicing digital minimalism is a journey that requires patience and loads of intentionality. By gradually decluttering your digital life and simplifying your interactions with technology, you can reclaim your time, attention, and mental clarity. Remember, the goal is not to eliminate technology entirely but to use it mindfully and intentionally to support a more fulfilling life.
