How to Maximize Your Closet Space

By Blog, Closet Organizing, Quick Organizing Tips No Comments

Have a Messy Closet?

Despite your best efforts to keep an organized closet, does it still feel like a chaotic mess?

Do you often find yourself thinking “I have nothing to wear!” every morning?

In today’s consumer-driven world, we’re constantly being urged to buy more, and it’s easier than ever to accumulate more than we need. But with these few simple strategies, you’ll easily be able to purge and organize your closet.

Get ready to start each morning feeling fresh and confident in your new calming, functional space!

Declutter + Purge Your Closet

Think about this for a moment; how much time is wasted while you get ready each morning?

Between eating breakfast, picking an outfit for the day, styling ourselves, packing lunch, and don’t even get me started on adding kids in this routine… that’s a lot to manage!

Each day, we’re already making an average of 35,000 conscious and subconscious decisions. So wouldn’t it be more productive of us to save that extra brainpower and take a few of them off our plate?

There’s one particular moment about creating a organized closet that has always stood out to me, and it happened at the time I was just starting my business.

I was working in the home of a busy mom when she confided in me that the most stressful part of her morning routine was getting dressed.

Once asked when the last time her closet was cleaned out was, she had an epiphany!

She had never realized just how much stress was caused by her closet being disorganized and too full.

The next day I was with her, I said, “Today’s the day we get you an organized closet!

She excitedly agreed, and one by one I pulled each item out of the closet and asked her:

 “Do you love this?

Do you wear this?

Does it fit and make you feel great when you wear it?

If she answered No to any of these key questions, the item went straight into the donate pile! (we also had “Try-on” and “Give to friends” piles, too)

Organize Clothes In Your Closet

Next, we started to hang related items together in the closet – pants, blazers, cardigans, dresses, skirts, and tops.

Then, we arranged each section by color. I like to go from lights to darks, followed by the classic ordering of the rainbow. Something like this; whites, greys, browns, blacks, then red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Ahhhh, what bliss it was to just awe at such an organized closet!

Design Your Closet Organization

With everything neatly hung up, we tallied how many hangers we had used and planned a shopping trip.

I made sure to follow an important organizing rule: Never go shopping for containers or other organizing supplies until you’ve sorted through everything.

Many people make this mistake and end up returning most of what they bought. It’s important to know what you need to contain before you try buying the how (supplies).

It is also important to buy the right hangers for the right items in your newly organized closet.

Because in case you don’t know, there are different hangers for pants, skirts, shirts, and jackets!

If you want to know where to find my favorite hangers, check out this Instagram post and DM me for the links!

In my home, we have very limited storage. So I like to keep things contained in an allotted space.

When the stuff starts to spill out of that space, it’s time to let some go. I am constantly (monthly) giving things away and I’m finding that I buy way less than I used to!

Our household is a strong believer in “What’s old for me is new for someone else!

How To Actually KEEP Your Closet Organized

Have a “What NOT to Wear” Party

Invite your friends over and let them tell you what to get rid of!

Try everything on, relive some past memories, have a few laughs, then let those old clothes move out of your old cluttered closet. Now you’re on your way to an organized closet!

Note that your closet says a lot about you. Are you living in the present or living in the past?

BONUS: Let your friends shop your to-go piles! This doubles as a nice gesture for their help, and makes less donation trips for you 😉

Two Golden Rules to Live By

The One-In, One-Out Rule

This one is self-explanatory – when you buy something new, something old goes out. For example, when I buy a new pair of shoes or any piece of clothing, I remove at least one item from my closet.

Be ruthless!

It’s best to be realistic about what you actually wear, and what looks and feels fabulous on you.

I love passing items onto friends or taking them to my favourite charities. I’m a big supporter of the organization Dress For Success as well as various women’s shelters in my area. Also, keep an eye out for clothing drop bins in your area!

80/20 Rule

The 80/20 rule states that typically, we wear 20% of our clothes, 80% of the time.

So to follow this and maintain an organized closet, only keep the clothes that you love, use, feel good in, look great in, and THAT FIT! Do not even try to keep clothes that no longer fit or that you won’t wear. Yes, styles do come back eventually, but designers always update the look. (some vintage, designer pieces would be an exception to this rule)

Be realistic!

Whenever I buy something new I use the golden rules above and bring at least 1-3 items to charity or give them away to a friend. Be it clothes, books, jewelery, etc. Just ask my friends Holli and Alison who have been the lucky recipients of many clothes from my organized closet over the years! What’s old for me can be new for someone else 😊

Organization Tips: One-in, One-out Rule

By Blog, Closet Organizing, Quick Organizing Tips No Comments

Home + Office Organization Tips

Looking for effective organization tips? This one will have you off to a great start!

The One-in, One-out Rule

Apply this rule to all things in your office, home, and calendar.

When you bring something new into the space, remove something else to make room for the new item. A good office organization tip will help you control the amount of clutter you have AND help you get it organized.

For example, let’s say you love books and your bookshelf is at full capacity. If you keep buying books, eventually the books will be piled all over the floor and surrounding surfaces.

So instead, when you buy one new book, take out one book that you no longer need and give it away.

Decide the books you’ll part with using these key Q’s:

  • Do I use it for reference?
  • Will I read it / read it again?
  • Is the book still relevant to me?
  • Is the information inside up to date?
  • Does the topic align with my current goals?

Your donation will be new to someone else who will be very grateful for finding it! Plus your bookshelves won’t be too stuffed.

Which leads us to the next organization tip…

Decluttering Your Clothes Closet

This rule is also easily applied to closets!

When you buy new clothes, simply remove the same number of pieces.

It’s in good practice when downsizing your closet to pick clothes for the to-go pile that no longer fit your current lifestyle. This includes clothes that no longer fit or look the best on you, pieces you haven’t worn in 12 months, or are out of your current preferred style.

Donate these clothes to a charity or pass them on to friends!

Why You Have Unfinished Projects + The Cost of No Clutter Control – Part 2

By Blog, Home Office Organization, Time Management No Comments

The Meaning of Clutter Control

When a space is filled with too much stuff and has no form of clutter control in place, it can make you distracted and unfocused.

Drilling down to the real reason the piles are there is crucial to uncovering why you do what you do. Because once you get familiar with the real reason of WHY you keep feeding these habits, you’ll find there is room for growth, change, and implementing new methods of clutter control.

Then this is where the magic happens!

Organizing and “clutter control” can sound like pretty big commitments, but once you break down what it really means to control your clutter, you will see they really aren’t that scary after all!

Steps in the right direction can be as simple as spending a little extra time creating a folder for a new project, jotting down a date and setting a reminder for it in your digital calendar, or just using a velcro dot on a pen so it sticks in a place where you need it every time. It’s really that simple!

Use these few key questions to get to the root of where your piles are coming from. Read below and take some time to answer honestly!

Clutter Control Q’s:

  • What do distractions cost you on a daily basis:
    – In time?
    – In lost revenue?
    – In relationships?
    – For your health?
  • What is the physicality of keeping extra stuff costing you financially?
  • What don’t you have time for that you wish you could again?
  • Do you wish you could control and minimize your clutter easily?
  • What is in the way of you living out your true passion?

Take a few moments right now to add up the costs of your extra stuff. Remember to factor in all insurance costs, storage costs, cleaning costs, space allocation costs, and costs of containing your stuff.

Then there’s the time you spend maintaining your stuff.

Take a moment to access all of what your extra stuff and lack of clutter control is costing you and write that down on a piece of paper or in your computer.

“My stuff is costing me [$ this much] in wasted time, storage costs, maintenance…”

Lack of Clutter Control + Health of Your Immune System

Having too much stuff can also affect the health of your immune system, and anyone else who lives in your household or spends time in your cluttered workspace.

This is because when your piles of clutter or paper sit stagnant for too long, they become magnets for collecting dust, grime, and air pollutants.

And if they aren’t put away or cleaned regularly the whole room can quickly become a breeding ground for dust and bacteria… say hello to chronic sickness!

And what’s worse? These harmful types of inside environments can heavily aggravate existing allergy symptoms.

Don’t have any allergies? 👇🏼

Well, by spending a large portion of your time in a cluttered environment you are increasing your risk of developing asthma by a whopping 40%.

Is that a risk you’re willing to take?

So with all this in mind, what’s the next action step you’ll take towards making your office or room more inspiring?

Are you going to paint the walls? Recycle all your piles of paper and magazines that you rarely refer to? Buy a shredder? Hang up some inspiring artwork?

Whatever it may be, you already know you’ll need to make some changes in order to get rid of the dust piles and have an inspiring workspace again.

Go ahead and write down the first action step you’ll take.

Clear the Clutter from Your Calendar

If you didn’t know already, clutter control isn’t just about your physical stuff!

Think about all the commitments you’ve made by saying yes when you really wanted to say no. Do you have a tendency to try and please everyone by saying yes a lot?

You’ll need to learn how to set boundaries around your time if this sounds like you. The first thing you’ll need to do is get very clear on your own personal values and what’s of the most importance to you.

Make sure you schedule that important stuff first; relationships, time for yourself, exercising, getting enough sleep, and so on.

Then fill in the rest of your life!

What Should I Declutter Next?

These questions haven’t been easy so far, but they are important to consider nonetheless!

Now we’re at the perfect time to reflect where you are in this moment and assess what’s working, what’s not working, and what you’d like to be different moving forward.

The next action step that you take now could be the step that leads you to a whole new level of productivity and peace of mind. How exciting!

Having great clutter control and finally being organized in your office, home, and life is a beautiful thing!

If your stuff has side-tracked you, all there is to do is get back on track.

So, take your time in answering these important questions and then schedule your action steps and make it happen!

When we leave this place (and we all eventually will), you won’t be taking your stuff with you. All your precious things will remain exactly where you left them.

So do yourself and those you love a favor and get rid of all the unimportant stuff!

And remember to always enjoy the process – there is hope, life, and light at the end of the organizing tunnel!
