How to Declutter After Life Transitions

By Blog, Business Organizing, Expert Articles, Free Articles, Home Office Organization, Home Organizing No Comments

how to declutterIs your environment peaceful, organized and easy to find things?  Do you dream of your home and office being more organized and less chaotic?  Have you recently been through a transition in your life?  Rest assured that where ever you are in the organizing process or if organizing doesn’t come easy for you, you are not alone and there is help available to you to learn how to declutter.

There are two common themes that are externally related to physical clutter in offices and homes and impact your quality of life.

I’ll Deal with It Later Clutter

Often times, people ignore their clutter because they are so busy running from one appointment to another, taking care of the kids and everyone else, and at the end of the day they drop everything at the front door, are exhausted and say “I’ll deal with it later.”  They just want to put their feet up and watch an hour or so of TV to shut everything else off.   Then they wake up the next morning and do it all over again.  Before you know, the pile at the front door is a mountain of stuff, spilling over into the office, kitchen and bedrooms. You start getting panickyknowing how to declutter these huge piles becomes overwhelming.

Clutter is stuck energy and unhealthy!  It collects dust, weighs heavy on your mind and affects other family members.

Transition Clutter

The second common theme related to clutter is when someone is going through a transition.  A transition could be:

  • having a new baby
  • moving into a new home or to a new city
  • office or home renovations
  • divorce or illness
  • new job or transitioning from college or university into the workplace
  • Volunteering
  • Retirement and down-sizing
  • expanding a business or new projects and responsibilities
  • learning a new skill or technology, software and apps, to name a few

During the transition, whatever it is, it can be stressful, exhausting and time-consuming.

How to Declutter: Goals Guide You

If you know you are going to go through a transition, you can prepare for it, but sometimes transitions sneak up on us and things seem to spin out of control.  Also, a lot of times when you are in a transition, there is often times unfamiliar territory that you are going through and all kinds of new decisions that you’ve never had to make before.  It’s not always easy going through the unknown and decision making can be slower because of the emotional attachment.  You may feel frozen by the daunting task of heavy-weighted decisions and caught up in the emotional side of things.  When you have a goal and vision to work towards during the transition, decisions will be easier to make because you know what you want.

You’re Not Alone

Typically, people call me after the transition has happened and they don’t know how to declutter.  They typically have piles and chaos in their physical environment.  It’s too overwhelming for them to deal with and they need help or guidance with decision making on what to keep and what to let go of.  That’s where a professional organizer can help you jumpstart the organizing process and point you in the right direction to creating your dream environment that is going to nurture your soul and give you peace of mind that you can find what you need.  This process is life-changing for people when their space is organized.

In Sheri Keys McConnell latest book “Smart Women Embrace Transitions” she says “we need to change the environment when there is clutter, when we are not taking care of responsibilities or when there is chaos in our lives that prevents us from doing the internal work.”   She continues “we often subconsciously create the chaos so we don’t have to do the internal work.”   I agree with this.  Often times we can blame others instead of taking ownership for the changes we need to make internally and externally.

How to Maximize Your Closet Space

By Blog, Closet Organizing, Quick Organizing Tips No Comments

Have a Messy Closet?

Despite your best efforts to keep an organized closet, does it still feel like a chaotic mess?

Do you often find yourself thinking “I have nothing to wear!” every morning?

In today’s consumer-driven world, we’re constantly being urged to buy more, and it’s easier than ever to accumulate more than we need. But with these few simple strategies, you’ll easily be able to purge and organize your closet.

Get ready to start each morning feeling fresh and confident in your new calming, functional space!

Declutter + Purge Your Closet

Think about this for a moment; how much time is wasted while you get ready each morning?

Between eating breakfast, picking an outfit for the day, styling ourselves, packing lunch, and don’t even get me started on adding kids in this routine… that’s a lot to manage!

Each day, we’re already making an average of 35,000 conscious and subconscious decisions. So wouldn’t it be more productive of us to save that extra brainpower and take a few of them off our plate?

There’s one particular moment about creating a organized closet that has always stood out to me, and it happened at the time I was just starting my business.

I was working in the home of a busy mom when she confided in me that the most stressful part of her morning routine was getting dressed.

Once asked when the last time her closet was cleaned out was, she had an epiphany!

She had never realized just how much stress was caused by her closet being disorganized and too full.

The next day I was with her, I said, “Today’s the day we get you an organized closet!

She excitedly agreed, and one by one I pulled each item out of the closet and asked her:

 “Do you love this?

Do you wear this?

Does it fit and make you feel great when you wear it?

If she answered No to any of these key questions, the item went straight into the donate pile! (we also had “Try-on” and “Give to friends” piles, too)

Organize Clothes In Your Closet

Next, we started to hang related items together in the closet – pants, blazers, cardigans, dresses, skirts, and tops.

Then, we arranged each section by color. I like to go from lights to darks, followed by the classic ordering of the rainbow. Something like this; whites, greys, browns, blacks, then red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Ahhhh, what bliss it was to just awe at such an organized closet!

Design Your Closet Organization

With everything neatly hung up, we tallied how many hangers we had used and planned a shopping trip.

I made sure to follow an important organizing rule: Never go shopping for containers or other organizing supplies until you’ve sorted through everything.

Many people make this mistake and end up returning most of what they bought. It’s important to know what you need to contain before you try buying the how (supplies).

It is also important to buy the right hangers for the right items in your newly organized closet.

Because in case you don’t know, there are different hangers for pants, skirts, shirts, and jackets!

If you want to know where to find my favorite hangers, check out this Instagram post and DM me for the links!

In my home, we have very limited storage. So I like to keep things contained in an allotted space.

When the stuff starts to spill out of that space, it’s time to let some go. I am constantly (monthly) giving things away and I’m finding that I buy way less than I used to!

Our household is a strong believer in “What’s old for me is new for someone else!

How To Actually KEEP Your Closet Organized

Have a “What NOT to Wear” Party

Invite your friends over and let them tell you what to get rid of!

Try everything on, relive some past memories, have a few laughs, then let those old clothes move out of your old cluttered closet. Now you’re on your way to an organized closet!

Note that your closet says a lot about you. Are you living in the present or living in the past?

BONUS: Let your friends shop your to-go piles! This doubles as a nice gesture for their help, and makes less donation trips for you 😉

Two Golden Rules to Live By

The One-In, One-Out Rule

This one is self-explanatory – when you buy something new, something old goes out. For example, when I buy a new pair of shoes or any piece of clothing, I remove at least one item from my closet.

Be ruthless!

It’s best to be realistic about what you actually wear, and what looks and feels fabulous on you.

I love passing items onto friends or taking them to my favourite charities. I’m a big supporter of the organization Dress For Success as well as various women’s shelters in my area. Also, keep an eye out for clothing drop bins in your area!

80/20 Rule

The 80/20 rule states that typically, we wear 20% of our clothes, 80% of the time.

So to follow this and maintain an organized closet, only keep the clothes that you love, use, feel good in, look great in, and THAT FIT! Do not even try to keep clothes that no longer fit or that you won’t wear. Yes, styles do come back eventually, but designers always update the look. (some vintage, designer pieces would be an exception to this rule)

Be realistic!

Whenever I buy something new I use the golden rules above and bring at least 1-3 items to charity or give them away to a friend. Be it clothes, books, jewelery, etc. Just ask my friends Holli and Alison who have been the lucky recipients of many clothes from my organized closet over the years! What’s old for me can be new for someone else 😊

Desk Organization Tips to Clear Your Office Clutter

It’s the time of year again when we begin moving outdoors, taking in the crisp fresh air, and feeling a real sense of renewal!

And having your home and workspace organized helps immensely to welcome that wonderful freshness back into your life.

Check in with your Goals

Now is also the perfect time to assess where you’re standing with the commitments and goals you made to yourself in January.

Did you set out to be more active this year?

Be on time for meetings and stay ahead of deadlines?

Or maybe you set out to be better organized by finding great desk organization solutions?

Take a close look at your workspace and honestly answer these 3 questions:

  1. Where are the piles accumulating?
  2. What items don’t have a home?
  3. Is your Inbox on your computer overflowing with 100’s or even 1000’s of emails?
  4. Am I still in desperate need of office organization tips?

Your answers to these key questions will give you the clues for where you should start with these desk organization tips for your spring cleaning.

With these tips below, I recommend tackling one or two per day as to not overwhelm yourself right off the bat. It may start to feel really easy and freeing but remember to ration your energy so you can keep motivated and get your organizing done all week!

Most people only use 20 percent of what they have, 80 percent of the time. So with that in mind, let’s get moving and clear up your workspace!

Desk Organization Tips in 5 Easy Steps

Tip 1: Start with the Visible Piles First!

Period.

We can’t get to what we can’t even reach yet!

With our goal being to make a dramatic, visible result, we need to start with the visible things first.

Tip 2: Always Work in One Area at a Time

The goal here is to clear Command Central and create dramatic, visible results immediately. Starting with the top of your desk first.

What most desk organization tips won’t say is that people usually start with hidden piles in boxes or drawers, then after 2 hours they find themselves having not accomplished anything.

So to avoid this, grab 2 boxes and put every single piece of paper on your desk into box #1. Use box #2 for other desk things like pens, office supplies, books, and whatever else you have on your desk.

Now pick up the top piece of paper from box #1 and use the F.A.S.T. Principle™ – File it, Act on it, Schedule it, Toss it.

Handle each piece of paper in less than 60 seconds. Get rid of any decor items that you no longer love or that clutter up your desk.

Action Tip: Play your favourite music and set a timer for 1-2 hours.

Try to imagine when you walk into your office the next day. How will it feel to have a clear desk?

Likely like you’ve lifted 100 pounds off your shoulders!

Now let’s continue this desk organization process by tackling the piles on the floor using the F.A.S.T. Principle™.

Remember our time constraint for pieces of paper. There’s no time for lengthy evaluating here. The object of the game is to get this done as fast as possible.

Getting organized is a clarifying, cleansing way of connecting to what’s really important to you. You should enjoy the process and reward yourself along the way for all of your hard work!

Tip 3: Create Zones in Your Office

Action Tip: Beware of the hidden costs of clutter. It costs your time, money, and space to take care of the things you don’t use. Now play your favourite music, set a timer, and get down to work for a couple hours!

Think of your work area as having different activity zones. Consider how you move things across your desk, what items you use most frequently, and what relationships certain materials have with different desk activities.

Command Central zones could be:
  1. An In Tray for incoming mail
  2. An Out Tray for outgoing mail
  3. To-File Tray for papers to be filed
  4. Project file zone
  5. Reference file zone
  6. Resources zone

Action Tip: While advancing through these desk organization tips, group like activities or functions together, then label them and their areas for quick, easy access.

Tip 4: Conquer the Email Traffic Jam

Mismanaged incoming emails can become a significant drain on productivity. The more emails pile up, the less useful it is to the user and company.

On the other hand, an empty Inbox is a delight to look at!

It reminds us we are fully caught up.

Did you know that the real purpose of an Inbox is to serve as a temporary resting location for information and requested actions BEFORE they are read by you?

Our Inboxes are not a catch-all for everything we’ve ever received, and they’re also certainly not a replacement for our information filing systems.

Apply the F.A.S.T. Principle™ here with each email.

Tip 5: Organizing is a Process, NOT a Destination

Action Tip: Only keep what you love and currently use on a regular basis!

Congratulate yourself for taking action on these desk organization tips this week and for clearing off your desk!

You’ve made some serious changes and that is definitely something to be celebrated.

Do keep in mind though, that organizing is a continual process of re-evaluating. You still need to evaluate what your goals are, what activities you currently enjoy, and what you don’t enjoy anymore, then edit accordingly.

Continually ask yourself these questions:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Do I like it?
  3. Does it work for others?

Action Tip: Be willing to adjust your systems as your professional and personal lives evolve. Don’t worry about mistakes along the way, it’s just important to keep learning!
