The Stacker: Improving Your Stress

By Blog, Quick Organizing Tips, Simple Living, Time Management No Comments

🤍Dear Stackers,

Are you looking to start really working on improving your stress this year?

Have you found out what your organizing superpower is yet?!

Batching!

Oftentimes when you’re leaving out those neat little piles of projects, work supplies, hobbies, to-do’s, and such… what you’re really doing is grouping like things together to finish all at once (albeit, on another occasion, but still a win).

For other organizing styles, this is half their battle. So how can this superpower start to benefit you and improve your stress?

📑 Why am I prone to Clutter?

Stackers can be found living in clean and somewhat-organized homes. We say “somewhat” because no matter how many organized piles you have… a pile’s still a pile!

The Stacker mentality falls somewhere between procrastination and hyper-organization.

And because of this, simply putting things away as you go through your day is not always the easiest task.

When everything is put away in non-transparent boxes and bins, you may feel like you’re actually packing things away. Storing them! Rendering them no longer easily-accessible.

But this is really not the case, and you must glue that fact into your brain in order to start improving your stress!

Just because something is no longer in your direct line of sight doesn’t mean it’s gone or never to be found again. When you want to pick up where you left off on something, it should all be stored neatly in a container, so you can just pick it out of the closet and get right back into it!

Definitely nothing to be anxious or stressed about here.

💥 Confronting the Clutter

Fortunately, Stackers are totally able to maintain a detailed organizing system. The struggle is just finding the time to set it up in the first place.

You like to pile up and organize your project’s tools, papers, and materials. Which can amount to a lot of stuff.

Stackers sure love their stuff!

But in the long run, this will only impede your efforts at improving your stress levels.

Do you notice that when you pick up a hobby, you never forget to grab all of the reading materials, cooking utensils, art supplies, workout equipment, thingys, and doo-dads that you could possibly need?

So the key to improving your stress with this organizing style is to adopt a “good enough” mindset when setting up systems.

You don’t need to micro-manage every tiny aspect of everything you try out. Just try it out, and optimize as you go! You will never really know if something works for you unless you actually try it anyways.

See, the biggest contributor to your piles are projects, so try to limit yourself to just three ongoing projects at a time.

If you’ve had an on-the-go project out for a while, it may be time to put it away. You can always come back to it later when inspiration strikes, but for now, it is only taking up valuable space in your physical world (and in your mind!).

It can’t feel good to walk around your home and see piles and stacks of stuff everywhere.

So if you haven’t used your exercise equipment in a while, consider donating or selling it to someone who would appreciate it every day. This also opens up space for something you’re more currently passionate about like creating a reading room or scrapbooking space.

😍 Living clutter-free: Is it for me?

“Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.”

– Barbara Hemphill

Your aspirations always come from a good place, Stacker.

You feel like you can get so many things done in a day because you can preserve your energy throughout the day by delegating tasks for later.”

Just be careful that later doesn’t turn into never!

At some point, we all have to accept defeat and admit we can’t do all the things every day. That’s totally normal and there is no reason to beat yourself up about it! You’ve done the best anyone could expect of you.

I know your weakness is not holding onto useless clutter, but you do sure love to keep useful clutter around!

However, there comes a time when we must assess if the usefulness of an item outweighs the space it takes up.

Sure, your treadmill or bread maker might be useful… but if you’re only using them once or twice a year, that’s valuable space being taken up by something that someone else may love and use every day!

When playing keep or toss, think about the peace of mind an item costs you, too. This will make the biggest impact on improving your stress.

And if you can store it conveniently – great! Look out for clear bins and project totes, this way you can still view what’s inside.

To organize further, write an inventory list for each of your project boxes and keep those somewhere close by for reference. If you’re storing these boxes on a tall, open bookshelf just tuck them beside one of the totes.

😌 How to start Clearing the Clutter

The best way to get started with organizing any space is to set a timer and get to work!

Before you dive right into your piles though, set some goals beforehand and prioritize the most important things you’d like to accomplish in this session.

This way, you can keep yourself on track and if you don’t get to everything on your list, at least you’ll have finished the most pressing tasks!

Setting limits on yourself helps to keep distractions at bay so you can focus on the real tasks at hand.

When it comes to the organizing process, it’s important for a Stacker to improve their stress levels by learning to let go. Instead of keeping things because they are simply in good condition and not broken, ask yourself “Is this useful to ME? Is it useful NOW?”

Filling our homes with good quality, useful things does seem not so bad! But stuffing our homes with piles of these things (however good quality or important it may feel), is never going to feel good.

Labeling each project box as you go will help you to remember where items belong when you do your daily/weekly resets.

Plus, the rest of your household can easier maintain your systems when they understand how they work and where things should go!

Keeping everything in its place will help your space look neater for longer. Using these methods, you should be able to create a quick, visible result.

Though at times it may feel frustrating and long to finish a task… remember to choose joy in the process of decluttering and organizing!

Let’s begin with rating your level of commitment to getting your spaces organized:

On a scale of 1 to 10, how committed are you to edit, declutter, and organize the space? (level 1 is not committed at all, and level 10 is 100%, fully committed)

Download these free organizing assessments to track your progress in all areas!

Ask yourself these questions when deciding what you will keep, donate, or no longer need:

  • Do I honestly love it?
  • Do I use it weekly, monthly, or yearly?
  • When was the last time I thought about this item or used it?
  • Do I realistically need this item in my life going forward?
  • Did I even remember I owned this?
  • How many duplicates of the same item do I have?
  • What would be the worst possible scenario if I donated or passed it on?
  • In what situation would I realistically need or want this?
  • What would I like to have more space for?
  • Have my job or hobbies changed and it’s time to let some things go?
  • What keeps me awake at night or gives me stress and anxiety?
  • Am I committed to scheduling time, effort, and/or money to fix or repair this item?

💘 Invest time into YOU

Stacker, I know it’s not easy to balance putting current projects away while making everything exactly how you’d like it to look.

But I believe in you!

I know you can do this. It’s not easy to start, but once you clear off one shelf or one drawer, you gain momentum.

Keep a post-it note nearby if you must, but focusing on only keeping the necessities will take you to completion faster.

So let me know, does this feel attainable for you?

You will feel so much better after clearing just a couple piles and improving your stress levels! Remember to start with the high priority piles or the ones that bother you the most in order to create a dramatic, visible result right off the bat.

10 Ways To Stay Productive At Work Over the Holidays

By Blog, Expert Articles, Time Management No Comments

As winter vacation quickly approaches, this is our perfect opportunity to think about how others may be living it a little differently than us.

Usually, the holiday season is bright and sparkly, illuminated by strings of lights and Christmas cheer! There’s special baking to be done, thoughtful gifts to be wrapped, and a mantle to be decorated.

But for some of us – this is just an idle dream on our wish list.

Special occasions marked down on a calendar don’t mean the world winds down for everyone!

We still need our doctors and nurses, firefighters, dispatchers, news personnel and their production crews, too. Just to name a few!

Outside of organizations that normally run 24/7 there are still so many of us that work through the holidays to keep the world flowing (a huge thanks to you all!🤍)

So in order for us to soak up as many drips of the holiday season as we can get,

Here are 10 ways to stay productive at work over the holidays:

1. Start your work day routine earlier

You will actually double your productivity when you take advantage of this strategy!

Think about it, what would work more effectively? Sleeping from midnight to 8am, or from 10pm to 6am? The latter would give you a two-hour jump on the day. So in order to squeeze the most out of your day and be as focused as you can be, make sure you are setting boundaries around when your work day will begin and end.

2. Say “no” to people-pleasing anxiety

It’s not easy to say “no” to taking more on during the holidays. You want everyone to enjoy their time, and for work to close up as smoothly as possible.

But when you’ve got too much on your plate already, one must stop to think about their own needs and wants. Be polite but straightforward when declining a task or event invitation that may overload you. A great way to be courteous while turning something down is to say, “Thank you for thinking of me, but I am planning on spending that time working on X project/watching my daughter’s Christmas performance.” This conveys to the person that you’re grateful for their invitation, but that you also already have your priorities set.

3. Stay focused and productive at work

In order to keep yourself accountable for anything, you must first determine a goal to be held accountable to.

First of all, if you’re feeling in a slump, get your body moving to jostle your brain functions into working effectively. If you’re feeling overwhelmed this is the best technique to help you stay productive at work over the holidays. Then focus on the hardest thing first, A.K.A. your primary project. That task you most dread. Just get it out of the way or at least complete a big chunk of it right off the bat! Make sure to give yourself a realistic window of time for each thing on your to-do list and actually cut yourself off at that window.

4. Avoid getting distracted by thoughts

We all face distractions in the office (and our home offices). But even more so when the stresses of holidays and extended family come around!

To counter these distractions, remove anything that has distracted you in the past from your work area. This includes that eraser you’re always fidgeting with, your kids’ photos you reminisce with a little too long, and any loose papers that aren’t directly related to the task at hand. Put those items away in your desk for the holiday season and save them for January. Our goal is to be super productive and focused now!

5. Taking (important!) breaks from work

It’s important to take time off from work every now and then to relax and rejuvenate. A holiday is perfect for providing this much-needed break from your work days!

We spend a lot of time at work… so why do we feel guilty taking time off? You certainly deserve it. Even if you’re running your own business, it’s still vital that you’re taking time for yourself. As much as it may feel like it, you’re not shirking responsibility or becoming less focused on your goals. You’re taking care of yourself so you’ll have the stamina to be your best and work effectively once the holidays are over.

6. Shop early to avoid the “Christmas Creep

One of the risks of starting your shopping early is overbuying. But if you’re keeping track of your spending and who you’re buying for, this is no longer a worry.

Your best bet for having the most availability over Christmas is to look for sales now, shop online to avoid parking costs, and brainstorm creative ways to give the gift of experience. Gifts don’t have to cost a lot of money. You can bake a family member their favorite cookies or prepare a batch of healthy freezer-friendly snacks. You could type a list of restaurants to check out in the new year or create a “family favorites” recipe binder. Or give the gift of organizing with our Clear Out Your Clutter event in 2023! Think ahead – do you really want to sacrifice any of your enjoyment this holiday season? Instead of a cozy cup of hot chocolate while visiting with distant family, would you really rather be bustled around by a bunch of over-caffeinated shoppers? Choose to be productive now, you’ll thank yourself later.

7. Maintain your health during the holidays

Exercising is a great way to clear your mind. Not to mention the many health benefits that follow!

Being that we’re so busy around the holidays, meal prepping plays a huge role in our day-to-day energy! Food is quite literally our fuel, so you don’t want to be eating junk and slacking off at the gym now. The best way to combat energy fatigue is by finding ways to be active in your daily routine. You could have lunch in the park down the street, park your car further from wherever you go, and use stairs instead of an elevator.

8. Stop multitasking,
Learn how to prioritize and focus

A to-do list that’s way too long can leave you feeling exhausted just reading it all.

Instead of stressing about all the things you need to do today, prioritize just what’s important or has an immediate deadline coming up. Remember your focus is to stay productive at work over the holidays so you won’t be swamped when you return. Ask yourself, “What actually needs finishing this month?” Then get your mind focused and your hands dirty. Don’t forget to always keep your professional and personal tasks separate!

9. Manage interruptions from friends and family

Social media and texting are two of the largest distractions while at work.

Stay productive at work over the holidays by keeping your workday free from personal calls, texts, and emails. If you can’t manage this yourself, flip on the silent feature and store your personal cell in a desk drawer (lock it if you need to!). This way it’s completely out of sight and won’t be tempting you. Ask your loved ones to not call or text you during working hours unless it’s really dire.

10. Work Hard so you can Party Harder! 🥳

Why would we spend all of our energy working if there is no reward? We wouldn’t! This is where the “work hard, play harder” mentality is best adopted.

Above all the decorations and fancy dinners, the most important thing during any holiday is to make sure you’re truly enjoying quality time with your family. Let go of work when you’re not clocked in, it will all still be waiting for you whenever you head back.

Cherish the time you have with family, because you never know how many moments like these you will have left. 🤍

I hope that by following these tips you can soak up every ounce of holiday cheer!

It’s time to reconnect with yourself, your family, and pure JOY this year ✨ So remember to unplug, open up, and laugh until you burn enough calories for another slice of pie!

Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a refreshing New Year’s,

10 Smart Home Organization Ideas

By Blog, Expert Articles, Home Organizing, Simple Living No Comments

With the recent years’ influx of “smart homes,” one thing I am seeing a lot more of is smart storage!

Since there is less storage space in these small homes, we have had to get really creative with inexpensive, space-saving solutions. Often right down to the nitty-gritty of each drawer.

Not only are these little product changes making big storage impacts, but they’re also huge time savers. Bonus points for productivity!

These tips are especially useful for smaller spaces but also applicable to larger homes just the same.

Since there is no better time to get organized than the present, so let’s get right into these ideas!

Spice Jars

These aren’t only pretty kitchen accessories – they’re super functional and space-saving too!

Instead of a drawer stuffed full of spices in plastic bags, or a cupboard of miscellaneous bottles, find exactly what you need with uniform labeled jars. These can be purchased as fancy or inexpensive as you like, with a wide array available both online and in-store.

An extra tip: use a small funnel to decant the spices and powders. You’ll save a whole lot of mess!

Turntables

One of my all-time favorite products are turntables! I love them because they are so versatile.

I frequently use turntables in kitchens for oils and sauces, liquor, and breakfast spreads. They are also very handy in bathrooms for skin and hair care products, and laundry rooms for bottles of detergent. These products come in many durable materials; acacia wood, bamboo, and acrylic.

Drawer Dividers

Have you ever run into the drawer-jamming problem of that pesky potato masher getting stuck? I know I sure have!

My best solution for organizing kitchen, bathroom, and office drawers is to use dividers or small containers to keep things separate. One option I like are these bamboo drawer tension dividers. If you’re looking for a more sectional type of organization, smaller containers come in just about any material you could wish for.

Shop This Look:

Canisters in a Drawer

Say goodbye to reaching your whole arm into a flour bag! A drawer of canisters for bulk ingredients makes cooking and baking simple and accessible.

Make sure to first measure out your desired drawer for the dimensions of your canisters before purchasing! Once you’ve got them set, decant your bulk ingredients into them and make sure to label the top of the lids.

Color-Code Playroom

How many times a day do you ask your kids to clean up? Don’t worry, I won’t make you count – but I can guess it’s too many!

Turn cleanup into a fun activity for little ones by color-coding toys and books. Tidying time will turn into matching colors and become less of a chore. Plus, they will know where each of their toys are when they want to play!

Velvet Grid Jewelry Tray

Not only are these smooth jewelry trays gorgeous, but they’re also overtly functional too!

I like to use them for jewelry, specifically earrings to organize matching pairs. They also come in different sizes, so they are not always squares but can be rectangles, and there are even designs for rings to be propped up in.

Hanging Files

Useful in homes and work offices alike, this way of filing makes it easy to file papers and even easier to retrieve them.

This system is great for businesses. Keep any paper copies of legal documents safely stored in your chosen style of organization. I also use this method for organizing kids’ artwork, greeting cards, and printed photos.

Cleaning Caddy

Cleaning isn’t at the top of my fun-list, but I can make it a little less of a hassle by keeping products and accessories easy to grab and go!

Trade reaching into the back of a cupboard of loose cleaning product bottles for grabbing one easy caddy. My favorite caddy is functional and stylish, with a comfortable handle and durable bin. These dimensions easily fit into most under-the-sink storage spaces and storage closets.

Jewelry Board

One of everyone’s least favorite steps of getting ready is to approach a jumbled knot of necklaces. Often many of us will give up and suffice without one!

Keep them separated and hanging with a board attached to the back of a cabinet door, or a standalone hanging organizer. This also helps you to organize them however you please; by color, length, style, material, etc.

Shop This Look:

Garage Hooks

Most of us have a space in our garage or equipment shed where we cram gardening tools into one spot and then fight to retrieve one when needed.

Let’s cut that unnecessary frustration out and hang these tools up! With these easy-to-install hooks, you will be able to see where each item is and take them down without a problem. With materials ranging from plastic to durable metal out there, you can even hang heavier equipment too!

With all these smart storage tips, what will you do with your extra space? Do you already use some of these ideas in your home? Comment below!
