5 Trending Color Palettes For Your Next Organizing Project

By Blog, Home Organizing, Inspiration No Comments

These timeless fall trends won’t have you chasing new decor pieces every season 🍂 To create a warm and cozy space all you need is to pick a vibe, then stick to a color scheme.

After implementing these decorating ideas, your home’s look will be sure to stand the test of time!

Read more on this below! 👇🏼

Deep + Earthy

(mossy green, warm browns, off-white, tan, olive green)

When I see these colors combined, I feel like I’m walking into a library with a hot cup of tea ready to flip through some art history books! Bring this cozy vibe into your humble abode by incorporating deep, natural colors.

       • Keep throw blankets in a woven basket

       • Use dark-stained wood for your kitchen and pantry products

       • Give center stage to a patterned area rug

       • Look for wooden furnishings, or pieces with wood features

       • Space out furniture so the dark colors don’t appear cramped

These rich, luscious tones are especially complimentary to an abundance of houseplants!

Delicate Wallpaper

(dramatic prints, maximalist decor without going overboard)

The great thing about wallpaper is that you can switch up your decor and furniture pretty easily as long as you stick to the color realm of the paper! This season, subdued florals and bright-but-bold shapes are super in.

       • Use single colored organizing products to avoid clashing

       • Pairs with neutral furniture and throw pillows with bright color pops

       • Boxes with lids, chests, and drawers are great storage options

       • Off-whites and creams compliment busy patterns

       • Avoid shelves as storage, you will want most items out of sight

       • Unique light fixtures bring depth to wallpaper patterns

And remember… less is more. Be mindful not to overindulge in decor and keep clutter to a minimum.

Coastal Grandmother

(cool pastels, linen, ocean blues, navy, tan)

Now this one may sound a little “out there” but bear with me! Try to imagine a white sand beach house, a delicate charcuterie board and champagne, or a light and breezy home.

       • Wicker, wicker, wicker! For baskets, chairs, and storage ottomans

       • Modern, chic, purposeful decor

       • Plants with white flowers pair very well

       • A light-colored area rug or flowy curtains are great accents

       • Storage can be more “open;” under-the-coffee-table baskets, bookshelves, or floating shelves

But the greatest accent of all would be open windows on a beautiful, breezy day!

Natural + Stone

(coppers, multi-color stone, pistachio, tile pattern, muted browns)

Before you think this one practically speaks for itself, this year we’re adding a twist! Adding a dash of the above aesthetic, a pinch of leather rustic… and voila! This palette can be as fun as you like, since brightly patterned tilework is booming this season.

       • Tile can be used on floors, walls, and even pasted on side tables!

       • Stick with one non-natural color and surround it by naturals

       • Use white, sandy, or dark brown colored bins or containers

       • Cabinets with glass fronts create a beautiful combination

       • Display your kitchenware visually by hanging or stacking

Though natural and stony looks are normally quite classic, don’t be afraid to jazz it up with some daring hues!

Romantic Elements

(moody and romantic with warm royal, berry, and jewel tones)

Want to feel like you’ve been pulled back in time to a Victorian-era office study? This warm vibe of precious jewels with deep and mysterious touches will tuck you in and make you feel oh-so cozy.

       • Classic storage pieces like wardrobes, chests, and dressers

       • Medium brown to black wood for furniture and storage bins

       • Style with plants of low saturated colors (greys, browns, whites)

       • This theme is quite dark; add interest with uniquely shaped decor

       • Utilize glass and gold accented products for your kitchen and pantry

       • Draw the eye around with black and gold photo frames

Autumn brings so many beautiful changes and choices. And a great way to welcome the season is to spruce up your mood and decor at home😌

I’m undecided on a favorite palette, comment yours below!

How to Create A Cozy Fall Closet

How to Stay Motivated to Organize Anything

By Blog, Home Organizing, Quick Organizing Tips No Comments

Are you growing tired of reorganizing your closet, kitchen, or desk drawers over and over again?

Or not sure where to begin with your closet purge?

Well here’s the truth…

You don’t actually need to be organizing every day of the week.

There, now quit the self guilt!

Organizing a room is the same as any other project you take on. Every project has a beginning and an end, with some scheduled steps in-between. It’s that easy.

One of the most asked questions I hear from friends and clients is “how can I motivate myself to organize the house?” The runner-ups are how to stay motivated, avoid procrastinating, and stop feeling guilty when “stuff” keeps piling up.

Well, we’re all busy these days and being pulled in many directions! Sometimes it’s our own fault for saying yes when we really want to say no, and the result of this is too much to do and not enough time to get it done. Which can make us feel resentful, frustrated, overwhelmed, and just plain tired.

Enough Already

If the piles of clutter are driving you crazy and you’re drained from looking at the mess, it’s a sign that you’re causing yourself a lot of unnecessary stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. The physical clutter is also keeping your mind cluttered.

When you keep your whole to-do list and all of your dreams, goals, and projects in your head, you will begin to feel overwhelmed and therefore unmotivated. And worse yet – you won’t be able to see the steps you’ve taken toward your organizing project!

Measuring your progress is critical to your organizing success and motivation!

The key to getting and staying motivated with your organizing project is to not skip the first step in the organizing process. You need to see the progress as it happens. There have been times when I’ve glazed over this step and have not written it down on paper. And consequently, I have lost all interest and moved onto the next exciting idea because it just sounds much better. Don’t fall into the trap of the bright, shiny object syndrome or starting lots of different organizing projects at once.

First Step to Organizing Anything

The first step to getting organized is creating a visual of what you want your newly organized space to look like. You need to get it out of your head and onto real paper. Print a photo or cut out a magazine image of what you want the space to look like and write out a few words that describe how you want your space to look, smell, or feel. (Need some inspo? Check out our Pinterest!) For example,

“My bedroom is my sanctuary.”

“The family room is clutter-free and it is pleasant to have guests over.”

“Preparing meals is a breeze.”

“I love walking into my office to a clean desk every morning.”

“I can quickly find any papers when I need them.”

“My computer files are fast to retrieve.”

Using an image makes the project even more motivating because you can see it throughout the whole process and it also helps your brain to stay focused on the goal.

If you’re someone who thinks everything needs to be stored inside your brain or computer – give your mind a break, go get out your colored felt pens and a piece of paper and just be creative for 10 minutes. Most of us are visual and love pen-to-paper time. So go for it and draw or write down what your organizing goal is. Now!

Next, post the visual organizing goal on a wall, fridge, or somewhere you will see it every day. Every time you look at your organizing goal, you’ll be inspired and motivated to take the next action step!

Chunking Down Your Projects

The next step is writing down all the action steps that you or someone else needs to do to get your organizing project complete. Type it out or write on paper, either way is ok. Just get it out of your head so organizing your chosen space isn’t going to be overwhelming.

To increase your motivation and really get inspired, estimate how long you think each action step will take; 10 minutes, 20, 45, 60, etc. Chunking your project down into bite-sized action steps increases your success rate and will keep you motivated because you will actually see the progress as your list gets crossed off!

Next, schedule three action steps in your calendar and make sure you hold yourself to these appointments. Don’t be afraid to enlist a friend to hold you accountable if you need a little extra push!

If something more interesting comes up and you’re about to ditch your 20 minute organizing session, look at your visual organizing goal and ask yourself if it’s worth procrastinating and putting it off. If the answer is yes, reschedule your 20 minute session. And if you’re too tired to stick to your schedule, decide to take 10 minutes now and do it anyways! You’ll feel less guilty (and actually more motivated!) because you’ve done something to move your organizing project forward.

Getting Organized Does Not = Perfection

Let go of all thoughts perfectionism. Organizing isn’t about having everything perfect all the time! Start by aiming for easy to access and easy to put away.

No Cookie Cutter Solutions

And one last piece of wisdom for staying motivated with your organizing projects: “There is no one-size-fits-all solution to getting organized, and no cookie cutter solutions here at Simply Productive. Because one size does not fit all. There are key foundational organizing principles you need to know, yes, but then organizing systems and processes are personalized so they work for you!”

My intention is to inspire, educate, and teach you about creating organizing systems and processes that work for your home and workspace. So you have less stress and more free time for what’s important to you!

Now go and create your organizing goals right away, and post them in the comments section below!

Work-Life Balance vs. Work-Life Negotiation

By Blog, Business Organizing, Time Management No Comments

This topic of work-life balance for entrepreneurs has been something I’ve never totally bought into. Both as an employee and as an entrepreneur myself.

There are times in my life when both my work and personal lives are flowing with ease. I experience way less stress in my life.

…then there are times when I’m working too much and stress levels are sky-high. I’ve experienced occupational burnout several times and usually, my body just says enough. And it takes me weeks to recover from these problems.

You would think I have learned my lesson the last time😅

What I have learned over the years (and I’m still getting better at this all the time!) is the importance of setting boundaries. Re-evaluating my priorities regularly and listening to my body are examples of work-life negotiation. These practices are important to my well-being.

My top priority is to take better care of myself. For example, my solutions for this are eating healthier, drinking more water, exercising, getting a good night’s sleep, unplugging, and enforcing downtime.

For me, this could look like gardening, reading, walking along the water, cooking and baking to fill the freezer, or simply hanging out with friends.

There are times when I’m working on a project, and the deadline is a week away, like a moving day. And it’s all hands on deck to get the house packed, repaired, painted, carpets redone, and all cleaned up.

Then the big day arrives, and my team is frantically unpacking to set up the kitchen and bedrooms.

In the past four months alone, I’ve packed, moved, and unpacked five households!

My work-life balance has been more on the work side lately. Our cycle is that we work longer days to get the job done faster.

Then we rest 😴

This leads me to believe in work-life negotiation as I find it more relatable in terms of how I merge time management and my personal life.

When I’m working longer hours, I negotiate with myself to schedule work days off. And on those days, I turn off my cell phone and don’t go into my office.

I literally turn it all off 📵

It might be a day or three days where I’ll get away. I’ll garden, read, go for walks with my husband, cook, get a massage, a mani-pedi, or meet with friends. When It’s my off time, I unplug!

When I negotiate with myself that I will have to work longer hours for a short time, I still make sure I’m taking care of myself.

With work-life negotiation – as Dr. Chris Mullen, Ph.D. wrote in Forbes the concept of work-life balance is outdated.

Implementing work-life negotiation encourages you to reassess your workplace goals and empower not only yourself but also your employees.

This opens up the opportunity to discover an individual path of work time vs non-work time. It’s also a good tactic to force yourself into developing good time management skills.

It means you still get your work done… and you get to make time for yourself and your personal responsibilities.

So with all that, are you on Team Work-Life Balance or Team Work-Life Negotiation? 🧐
